Short bowel syndrome
Definition: State after the removal of a small intestine section. If more than 100 cm of the small intestine were removed, this is referred to as short bowel syndrome.
Reasons for the removal of parts of the small intestine
- Vascular occlusions within the intestine
- Chronic-inflammatory diseases of the bowel (Crohn’s disease)
- Intestinal cancer
- After irradiation
- Injuries / accidents with bowel injury
- Volvulus (in children)
- Bowel occlusion
- Removal of necrotic tissue after inflammations in the gastro-intestinal tract
